Body Image Disorders

We all have a natural body size and shape that is unique based on our genes. One size does not fit all.

The best thing you can do for the health of your body, the fun in your social life, and your sport performance is to accept that you have a natural body size and shape and that trying to alter it means that you will become unhealthy and that your sport performance may be affected.

The body size that you have been born with cannot be permanently changed. Fad diets that sell muscle-building, miraculous body sculpting, and weight loss are all selling temporary body change. All the weight will eventually come back onto your body. It can be difficult to accept this reality; especially if your natural body size does not match the images you see in the media or fit the stereotypical body type for your sport.

Intense body dissatisfaction and trying to alter your natural body size and shape can eventually lead an athlete to develop disordered eating or an eating disorder.
